Before creating my feature article, i wrote down some ideas.
BRAINSTORMING IDEAS FOR FEATURE ARTICLE :
colour theory
similarities between make up and art terms - brushes, blending, sculpting etc
art as therapy - make up as therapy
make up tips & tricks
art tips & tricks
self expression through make up and art
quick lesson of art history
makeup myths
I ended up going with the last concept, because I think it fits the purpose of the whole project the best. I plan to include at least one photo from the photoshoot in the article. I will also reformulate the other ideas as titles that will be included in the table of contents
I wrote the article from the perspective of the ‘Make Urself Art’ editorial team collaborating with an artist and included a quote. Obviously I modeled for the photos, created the drawing and wrote the article and this post myself, but in this context the artist featured in the article is the model.
Self expression through make up and art
Throughout this whole magazine we want to reinforce the idea that makeup is a form of art. Makeup is an art form not just because of the creative process one does while doing a makeup look, but also because it is a form of self expression.
Before going more in depth in the main topic of this article, we want to define the broad term of self expression. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘self expression’ as ’the expression of one's own personality : assertion of one's individual traits’. Oxford Languages defines it as ‘the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, especially in writing, art, music, or dance’.
People express their personality through different mediums like verbal communication, social media, places they attend, but we think that by channeling your inner creativity through a makeup look you are matching your interior self to your exterior self. Through this process you aren’t only showing others your personality on your face, it’s also a way to understand yourself better and allow yourself to explore your personality and identity. You can gain more knowledge about what you like and what you don’t, and also build your confidence.
One example of self expression is the drawing and the makeup look pictured on the left. We at ‘Make Urself Art’ collaborated with Tyler James, the artist featured on the cover and let them have full creative control. They created a drawing using pastels, a medium that uses techniques similar to typical makeup techniques. Then the artist used the drawing as an inspiration for the final makeup look - same colours, similar shapes and white lines. We asked them why artistic expression is important and here is what they said:
“ This makeup look is a reflection of how I see myself, a testimony of self-expression through bright, bold and imperfect colours and shapes. Self-expression through make up is important to me because it mirrors my inner self, just like the drawing mirrors the art on my face.”
