I have always been very passionate about art in all of it's forms. In recent years I have started experimenting with make up and I see it as a form of art. I know not everyone might agree with that statement, but the main idea for my magazine is artistic expression through make up. It will be an editorial beauty magazine.

I haven't found a perfect title for it yet, but I have ideas for a few articles that could be included (I will pick the most interesting one for the feature article) and two ideas for the main cover.

My ideas for articles are:

  • concepts you can find in traditional art and how they directly relate to make up techniques and looks (ex: the use of colour theory);

  • similarities between make up terms and art terms (ex: both make up and painting use brushes; we use words like blending, sculpting, highlighting, etc in both);

  • art is a form of therapy, so therefore make up can be seen as therapeutic too.

For the cover I thought it would be interesting to create an abstract painting on a canvas and do a more simplified version of that painting on my face using make up. The layout of the cover photo would be a bust up photo where the model stands in front of the painting with the make up look on their face. I will "model" on the cover because I do make up the best on my face.

From a marketing perspective I think the magazine could fill a gap in the market - most beauty magazines are focused on either news and gossip or tutorials and “the right way to do make up” but this magazine will focus on the parallels between art and make up and how you can use make up to express yourself rather than hide a part of yourself.

Firstly I created a mood board with make up looks I found on Pinterest that inspire me. I created this using the website: https://milanote.com/

Then I chose a colour scheme based on the eyeshadow palettes that I own. In procreate I colour picked different shades from two palettes and I ended up with this colour scheme. I knew that I wanted a "rainbow" palette but I played around with the shades that I have.

For the painting, I have not found an exact reference of what I want to do so I created my own with these exact colours in Procreate. I want the painting to be abstract so the final product will not look exactly like the reference, but I think it's helpful to have a starting point.

As a makeup look on my face I will use eyeshadow for the different colours and face paint/wet liners for the white parts. Because the human face is rounded, the lines will need to be simplified but it is something I know I can achieve.

In case my first idea with the model in front of the painting ends up clashing too much and being too overwhelming/distracting the front cover will be the model against a simple background and the back cover will be the painting.
